High protein casserole dinners are one of the easiest ways to turn a few everyday ingredients into a filling meal that can feed the family and leave enough for tomorrow. You get the protein, vegetables, sauce, and comforting flavors in one baking dish, which also means less cleanup at the end of the night.

These 23 casseroles include beef, chicken, ham, tuna, sausage, salmon, eggs, beans, and plenty of cheese. I have built each version around defined ingredient amounts and serving sizes rather than attaching a protein number to a vague serving. That matters because changing the amount of meat, dairy, pasta, or the number of portions can change the protein per serving considerably.

Most of these recipes also work well for meal prep. If that is your main goal, you may also like these high protein meal prep ideas on a budget.

1. Cheeseburger Casserole (35g Protein)

This casserole brings the best parts of a cheeseburger into an easy family dinner. Lean ground beef keeps the protein high, while cheddar, tomatoes, onions, and a modest amount of pasta give it the comfort food feel you expect from a casserole.

For six servings, I use 1½ pounds of 90% lean ground beef, 6 ounces dry pasta, 1½ cups shredded cheddar, diced tomatoes, onion, garlic, and seasonings. Dividing the finished casserole into six portions gives each serving approximately 35 grams of protein.

It is a particularly good option when you want ground beef to stretch beyond burgers or tacos without reducing the amount of protein on the plate.

2. Ham and Potato Casserole (33g Protein)

Ham, potatoes, and melted cheese make this one of the more traditional casseroles in the collection.

A six serving version uses 2 cups diced cooked ham, 2½ pounds russet potatoes, 3 cups shredded cheddar, 1½ cups milk, onion, and a simple flour and butter sauce. That combination provides about 33 grams of protein per serving.

Thinly slicing the potatoes helps them cook evenly. Cover the casserole during the first part of baking, then uncover it near the end so the cheese can brown.

3. Enchilada Casserole (39g Protein)

Instead of rolling individual enchiladas, layer everything directly in the baking dish.

For six servings, use about 1½ pounds cooked shredded chicken, corn tortillas, enchilada sauce, black beans, green chiles, and 2 cups shredded Mexican cheese. With these portions, each serving lands at approximately 39 grams of protein.

The black beans contribute both protein and fiber, while the chicken and cheese provide most of the protein. Finish it with cilantro, salsa, or diced tomatoes after baking.

4. Sausage and White Bean Casserole (31g Protein)

White beans and sausage make an especially hearty combination because both contribute protein while the beans also add fiber.

For six servings, use 1½ pounds Italian chicken sausage, two 15 ounce cans of cannellini beans, crushed tomatoes, onion, garlic, chicken broth, and a light Parmesan topping. This version provides approximately 31 grams of protein per serving.

Brown the sausage before combining everything in the casserole dish. That extra step gives the finished sauce much deeper flavor.

5. Cheesy Chicken Bake (45g Protein)

This is a straightforward casserole for nights when you want plenty of protein without a long ingredient list.

Using 2 pounds of boneless skinless chicken breast, 1½ cups shredded cheddar, 1 cup plain Greek yogurt, broccoli, garlic, and seasonings makes six substantial servings at approximately 45 grams of protein each.

Greek yogurt makes the sauce creamy while adding more protein. Bake until the center of the casserole reaches 165°F.

6. Tuna Noodle Casserole (34g Protein)

Tuna noodle casserole can be much more protein focused than the traditional condensed soup version.

For six servings, combine four 5 ounce cans of tuna, 8 ounces dry egg noodles, 1½ cups plain Greek yogurt, 1 cup peas, 1 cup milk, 1 cup shredded cheddar, and a little broth. Each serving provides approximately 34 grams of protein.

Greek yogurt creates the creamy texture without needing a heavy canned sauce, while tuna remains the main protein source.

7. Chicken and Spinach Bake (44g Protein)

Chicken, spinach, and cheese make an easy casserole that feels comforting without being excessively heavy.

Use 2 pounds of chicken breast, 10 ounces frozen spinach, 1 cup Greek yogurt, 1½ cups mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic, and Italian seasoning for six servings. Each portion contains approximately 44 grams of protein.

Make sure frozen spinach is thoroughly thawed and squeezed dry before adding it. Removing that excess liquid prevents the casserole from becoming watery.

8. King Ranch Chicken (39g Protein)

This casserole layers shredded chicken with tortillas, peppers, tomatoes, sauce, and cheese for an easy Tex Mex inspired dinner.

A six serving version can be made with 1½ pounds cooked chicken, 8 corn tortillas, 1½ cups shredded cheese, bell pepper, tomatoes with green chiles, onion, and a creamy Greek yogurt based sauce. It provides approximately 39 grams of protein per serving.

Rotisserie chicken can make preparation faster, but check the package if you are closely tracking sodium or nutrition.

9. Chicken Pot Pie Casserole (38g Protein)

Chicken pot pie becomes much easier when you make it as one large casserole.

Use 1½ pounds cooked chicken breast, carrots, peas, celery, chicken broth, milk, and a biscuit topping for six servings. Keeping the topping moderate allows the chicken to remain the focus, giving each serving approximately 38 grams of protein.

The creamy filling and golden biscuit layer make this especially good when you want a comforting high protein dinner.

10. Chicken Divan (45g Protein)

Chicken Divan combines chicken and broccoli under a creamy cheese sauce.

For six portions, use 2 pounds chicken breast, about 6 cups broccoli florets, 1½ cups Greek yogurt, 1 cup chicken broth, 1½ cups cheddar, and a little Parmesan. Each serving provides approximately 45 grams of protein.

Greek yogurt works particularly well here because it keeps the sauce creamy while adding protein.

11. Everything Bagel Breakfast Casserole (32g Protein)

Casseroles are not limited to dinner. This one is useful for breakfast meal prep or breakfast for dinner.

For six servings, combine 12 large eggs, 1 pound turkey breakfast sausage, 1½ cups cottage cheese, 1 cup shredded cheddar, bell pepper, onion, and everything bagel seasoning. Each portion provides approximately 32 grams of protein.

Cottage cheese adds protein and also helps keep the egg mixture soft instead of dry after reheating.

12. High Protein Baked Ziti (37g Protein)

Traditional baked ziti can become much more protein focused by using more meat and slightly less pasta.

For eight servings, use 1½ pounds lean ground beef, 12 ounces dry ziti, 15 ounces part skim ricotta, 2 cups mozzarella, Parmesan, marinara sauce, and one egg. Each portion provides approximately 37 grams of protein.

Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes after baking so the layers hold together when sliced.

13. Vegetable Egg Bake (28g Protein)

An egg bake is one of the simplest ways to prepare several protein rich portions at once.

For six servings, use 12 eggs, 2 cups cottage cheese, 1½ cups shredded cheddar, spinach, bell pepper, mushrooms, and onion. Each serving provides approximately 28 grams of protein.

The vegetables can easily be changed depending on what you already have in the refrigerator.

If eggs are not your thing, these high protein egg free breakfasts give you plenty of alternatives.

14. Buffalo Chicken Casserole (43g Protein)

Buffalo chicken casserole is spicy, creamy, cheesy, and particularly easy to keep high in protein.

Use 2 pounds cooked shredded chicken breast, about 4 cups cauliflower rice, 1 cup Greek yogurt, 1 cup shredded cheddar, buffalo sauce, celery, and a small amount of blue cheese for six servings. Each portion contains approximately 43 grams of protein.

Cauliflower rice absorbs the sauce without adding the heaviness of pasta, while Greek yogurt helps create the creamy base.

15. Baked Salmon with Roasted Cauliflower and Broccoli (39g Protein)

Not every casserole needs pasta or cheese. Salmon and vegetables can roast together in the same baking dish for an easy high protein dinner.

For six servings, use six 6 ounce salmon fillets with cauliflower and broccoli florets, olive oil, lemon, garlic, salt, and pepper. Each serving provides approximately 39 grams of protein.

Roast until the salmon reaches a safe internal temperature and the vegetables are tender around the edges.

This is also a natural fit if you are looking for more low carb high protein dinners.

16. Chicken Tetrazzini (36g Protein)

Chicken tetrazzini combines chicken, pasta, mushrooms, and a creamy sauce in one bubbling casserole.

For eight servings, use 2 pounds cooked chicken breast, 12 ounces dry spaghetti, 12 ounces mushrooms, 2 cups evaporated milk, 1 cup Parmesan, peas, broth, garlic, and seasonings. This provides approximately 36 grams of protein per serving.

Using plenty of chicken keeps the protein high without needing an oversized portion of pasta.

17. Veal Parmesan Bake (42g Protein)

Veal Parmesan gives you crispy cutlets, tomato sauce, and melted cheese in casserole form.

For six servings, use about 2 pounds veal cutlets, 1½ cups mozzarella, ½ cup Parmesan, marinara sauce, egg, and a moderate breadcrumb coating. Each serving provides approximately 42 grams of protein.

Bake the cutlets until cooked through, then add sauce and cheese near the end so the coating retains some texture.

18. Taco Casserole (36g Protein)

This easy casserole puts seasoned beef, beans, cheese, and classic taco flavors into one baking dish.

For six servings, use 1½ pounds lean ground beef, one 15 ounce can black beans, 1½ cups shredded Mexican cheese, salsa, corn tortillas, onion, and taco seasoning. Each portion provides approximately 36 grams of protein.

Add lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, or Greek yogurt after baking so the fresh toppings stay crisp.

19. Meatloaf with Mushroom Gravy (35g Protein)

A meatloaf casserole is especially convenient because the meat and gravy can be prepared together.

For six servings, use 2 pounds 90% lean ground beef, 2 eggs, ¾ cup rolled oats, milk, onion, mushrooms, beef broth, and seasonings. Each portion provides approximately 35 grams of protein.

Allow the meatloaf to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. This gives the juices time to settle and helps the portions stay intact.

20. High Protein Lasagna (38g Protein)

Lasagna can provide plenty of protein when the meat and cheese layers are generous and the pasta does not dominate the dish.

For eight servings, use 2 pounds lean ground beef, 12 lasagna noodles, 15 ounces ricotta, 2 cups cottage cheese, 2 cups mozzarella, Parmesan, marinara sauce, and one egg. Each serving provides approximately 38 grams of protein.

Let it rest for 15 to 20 minutes after baking. Cutting immediately is the fastest way to turn neat lasagna layers into a pile of sauce and noodles.

21. Ham Mac and Cheese (32g Protein)

Adding a substantial amount of ham turns mac and cheese from a side dish into a complete protein rich dinner.

For six servings, use 1½ pounds diced cooked ham, 10 ounces dry macaroni, 2 cups cheddar, 2 cups milk, and a simple flour and butter sauce. Each portion provides approximately 32 grams of protein.

The ham already contributes plenty of savory flavor, so taste the sauce before adding extra salt.

22. Chicken Broccoli Rice Casserole (41g Protein)

Chicken, broccoli, rice, and cheese make this one of the easiest all in one family dinners.

For six servings, use 2 pounds cooked chicken breast, 2 cups cooked rice, 5 cups broccoli, 1½ cups cheddar, 1 cup Greek yogurt, chicken broth, garlic, and seasonings. Each portion provides approximately 41 grams of protein.

Using cooked rice prevents you from having to guess how much liquid the casserole needs, while Greek yogurt keeps the sauce creamy.

23. Tamale Pie (34g Protein)

Tamale pie finishes seasoned beef and beans with a golden cornbread topping.

For six servings, use 1½ pounds lean ground beef, one 15 ounce can black beans, tomatoes, onion, peppers, taco seasoning, 1 cup shredded cheddar, and a moderate cornbread layer. Each serving provides approximately 34 grams of protein.

Bake until the filling is bubbling and the cornbread is cooked through. Jalapeños, cilantro, salsa, or Greek yogurt make easy toppings after it comes out of the oven.

Making High Protein Casseroles Work for Meal Prep

The easiest way to keep casserole portions high in protein is to decide the serving count before you start cooking. A casserole containing 180 grams of protein, for example, gives you about 30 grams per serving when divided into six portions, but only about 23 grams when divided into eight.

Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and regular cheese can all contribute. Pasta, rice, potatoes, tortillas, and vegetables can then be adjusted around those protein sources rather than making up most of the casserole.

For cheaper meal planning ideas, these high protein meals under $5 are another useful place to start.

How to Store and Reheat Casseroles Safely

Casseroles are particularly convenient for leftovers, but they need to be cooled and reheated correctly. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of cooking and use most cooked leftovers within 3 to 4 days. USDA guidance says casseroles and other combination dishes should reach 165°F, and leftovers should also be reheated to 165°F. (Food Safety and Inspection Service)

For the single food safety reference used with this collection, see the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service safe temperature guide. (Food Safety and Inspection Service)

Final Thoughts

High protein casserole dinners make it much easier to cook once and get several satisfying meals from the same dish. Some, like cheesy chicken bake and Chicken Divan, lean heavily on chicken and dairy, while others use beef, ham, tuna, salmon, eggs, sausage, or beans to reach a substantial protein level.

The important part is portioning. The protein estimates above are calculated for the stated ingredient amounts and serving counts, so changing the meat, cheese, dairy, or number of servings will also change the protein in each portion.
